Converts HEIC photos from
Quick answer
A HEIC converter turns HEIC — the default iPhone and iPad photo format since iOS 11 — into JPG, PNG or WebP, so the picture opens on Windows, Android, websites and print services. HEIC files are roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG because they use HEVC compression, which is also the reason so much software still refuses to open them.
This free heic converter runs in the browser. Drop up to five HEIC or HEIF photos of 10 MB each, choose JPG, PNG or WebP, and download the results: about two seconds per photo at full resolution, with no signup, no watermark and nothing to install.
Uploads are deleted within 60 minutes and EXIF/GPS metadata is stripped from the output, so a shared photo does not reveal where it was taken. It behaves the same on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS.
Three steps, no learning curve
The whole flow takes under a minute, and nothing is installed on your device. Here is exactly what happens after you drop a file into the heic converter.
Drag and drop up to 5 photos, or click to browse. Each file can be up to 10 MB — plenty for a 48 MP iPhone photo.
Our heic converter decodes the HEVC image, fixes rotation, converts Display P3 to sRGB and writes it out as JPG, PNG or WebP — whichever you picked.
Save each converted photo with a single click. No watermark, no resize, no email required — and uploads are wiped within the hour.
Built for people, not pipelines
Most converters either watermark the output, cap you at three files a day, or quietly keep your photos. This one does none of that.
No trial timer, no watermark, no daily cap. Every conversion is free, forever.
EXIF and GPS data are stripped from your JPG, and every upload is deleted within 60 minutes.
Runs in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.
No cropping and no downscaling. A 12 MP photo stays 12 MP after conversion.
Display P3 is mapped to sRGB and orientation is baked in, so photos look correct everywhere.
Most 12 MP photos convert in under two seconds, including the upload.
Photos are converted on our server and then deleted — within 60 minutes, no exceptions. We never resell images, train models on them, or ask you to create an account.
Format fundamentals
HEIC exists because Apple needed smaller files. JPG exists because everything on earth can open it. That trade-off is the whole story.
| Property | HEIC | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | HEVC — about 50% smaller than JPG at the same quality | Discrete cosine transform — larger files |
| Compatibility | Apple devices, plus Windows with the HEIF extension | Universally supported by browsers, apps and printers |
| Transparency | Supports an alpha channel | No alpha channel |
| Metadata | EXIF, GPS and depth data | EXIF and GPS (removed by our converter) |
| Best for | Storage on iPhone and iPad | Sharing, uploading, printing and editing |
Convert when you need the photo to leave your Apple ecosystem: attaching it to a web form, uploading it to a marketplace listing, sending it to a Windows-using client, or printing it at a lab. A JPG opens everywhere, and a 12 MP conversion at quality 88 is visually indistinguishable from the original on screen.
Keep the original when storage is the constraint. HEIC halves the size of a photo library, which matters on a 128 GB iPhone. It also carries depth data for Portrait mode and supports transparency. Converting to JPG flattens all of that — so the safest habit is to export copies and keep the originals untouched.
Different destinations want different files. Instagram and most social apps expect a JPG of a few megabytes, so convert at full resolution and let the app resize it. Email clients and web forms often reject HEIC without explaining why — a JPG at quality 88 passes every filter. For printing, keep the largest JPG you have (a 12 MP file prints cleanly at 8 × 10 inches) and avoid re-saving it, because every save adds another round of compression. Publishing to a website instead? Pick WebP: same look, roughly a third smaller.
One upload, three outputs
The same HEIC file can leave here as any of the three. Pick the format that matches what you plan to do with the photo — the converter keeps the full resolution either way.
Every browser, phone, printer and web form accepts a JPG. We encode progressive JPEG at quality 88 with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, which is visually indistinguishable from the original at normal viewing sizes.
Use it for: email, printing, job applications, any upload that must open everywhere
Nothing is recompressed: every pixel survives the conversion and an alpha channel is preserved. The trade-off is size — a 12 MP photo can land around 12 MB, so it is not the format to email.
Use it for: editing, transparent cut-outs, logos, screenshots that will be re-cropped
WebP typically lands 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality and still supports transparency. If you are publishing photos on a site or in a newsletter, this is the format to use.
Use it for: websites, product pages, newsletters, apps that target modern browsers
Straight answers
Everything people ask before they trust a free heic converter with their photo library.
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is the default photo format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11, and it stores images compressed with HEVC — the same codec family used by 4K video. A HEIC file is roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG, which is why Apple switched, but plenty of websites and Windows apps still cannot open it.
Yes. This heic converter is free to use with no trial period, no watermark and no daily file cap. We do not ask you to create an account or hand over an email address, and there is nothing to install. Just upload, convert and download.
No. The conversion runs on our servers, so all you need is a browser. That makes it the simplest option on a locked-down work laptop, a Chromebook or a phone where you cannot install a desktop heic converter.
Your upload travels over HTTPS, is converted immediately and is deleted from the server within 60 minutes. We also strip EXIF metadata — including GPS coordinates — from the JPG we hand back, so the file you share does not reveal where it was taken.
Any JPG is lossy, so there is always a small amount of recompression. We encode at quality 88 with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling at full resolution, which is visually indistinguishable from the original for normal viewing and printing. The alternative — keeping HEIC — is only worth it if you never need to share the file.
Yes. Because the converter runs in the browser, it works identically on Windows 10 and 11, Android, ChromeOS, Linux and macOS — no HEIF extension, codec pack or app store download required.
You can queue up to 5 files per batch, each up to 10 MB, and start another batch as soon as the first finishes. Files are converted one after another so a large batch never overwhelms your connection.
The two usual reasons are size and format. Files over 10 MB are refused to keep the service fast for everyone, and files that are not actually HEIF containers — a JPG renamed to .heic, for example — are filtered out before conversion. AVIF images also use the HEIF container, but they are not HEIC and are rejected.
Yes. Use the “Convert to” switch above the upload box and pick JPG, PNG or WebP before you drop your files. JPG is the safest default for sharing, PNG keeps every pixel and any transparency (at the cost of a much larger file), and WebP produces the smallest file for websites. All three keep the original resolution.
Choose JPG when the photo has to open anywhere — email, a job portal, a print shop. Choose PNG when you plan to edit the image again or need a transparent background. Choose WebP when you are publishing to a website and want the smallest possible file; every current browser supports it.
No. We deliberately strip EXIF, GPS and color profile metadata during conversion to protect your privacy and reduce file size. The capture date is lost along with the location, so keep the original HEIC if you rely on that data.
Instagram does not accept HEIC from every device, and the desktop uploader rejects it outright, so convert the photos here first and upload the JPG normally. For a feed post 1080 pixels on the long edge is plenty — convert up to five photos in one batch and publish them as a carousel. Choose JPG rather than PNG: Instagram re-compresses uploads anyway, and a smaller file uploads faster on mobile data.
Drop up to five HEIC files into the box above; conversion starts automatically and every file gets its own download link, so you never re-upload the whole set. There is no daily cap — work through a large library in batches of five. A desktop heic converter can also help: Preview on macOS exports selected photos as JPEG, and the HEIF Image Extensions add HEIC support to Windows Photos, but neither handles a mixed folder as fast as a browser batch.
Yes. Switch the output to PNG before you upload. HEIC supports an alpha channel and the PNG output keeps it, so cut-outs, stickers and overlays stay transparent. JPG has no alpha channel, so the same photo converted to JPG gets a solid white background instead — that is the one case where PNG is the correct choice rather than the convenient one.
HEIC is a container that stores images compressed with HEVC, the codec family used by 4K video; JPEG (also written JPG) uses the much older discrete cosine transform. At the same visual quality a HEIC file is about half the size and can carry depth and transparency data, while a JPEG opens on literally every device, app, browser and print service. That compatibility gap is exactly why converting HEIC to JPG is still the standard step before sharing a photo.
